Abstract
  • Efforts have been made to ensure that individuals with disabilities are able to participate in various activities in multiple contexts to enhance their quality of life. Research suggests that children with disabilities and their families value congregational life just as much as children without disabilities; however, limited attention is given to the participation and presence of children with disabilities in faith-based communities. A common barrier limiting participation in faith-based communities is the congregation’s lack of knowledge and training. This project focused on the development of a sensory-friendly training program and resources for special needs ministry volunteers. The training provided education on sensory-integration-based strategies to support and supplement sensory rooms at a multi-site church. The results of this study indicate the benefits of efficient education and training to help volunteers support children and youth with disabilities so they can successfully engage in spiritual and religious activities.
