Abstract
  • The purpose of this project was to use sensory integration (SI) through interaction with horses to see if behavior or mood changed over time in children with autism. Pre-tests were emailed to parents of qualifying riders to assess their child’s behavior prior to SI activities. During the first three weeks of riding sessions, a different SI activity was integrated into their lesson plans each week. After the SI activities were implemented, post-tests were emailed to participants’ parents to assess parent perceived change in behavior or mood. A total of 3 parents responded to both pre and post-tests and were included in this study. The results of the study showed mood or behavior improvements after sensory integration for 2/3 participants. The results of this study were generally positive; however, the complete impact of the horse-human interaction and sensory integration is still not fully understood.
